There’s something about finding an object that has already lived an entire lifetime before it ever finds its way to you. 🤎📚
Waaay at the back of a little used bookstore in Pullman, Washington, I found these beautiful vintage books tucked away, some of them hidden there for years.
Each one dates somewhere between 1919 and 1931.
But one stopped me in my tracks.
Inside a children’s book from 1919 was a handwritten inscription:
For Milfred,
from Daddy and Mother
December 23, 1923.
Over 100 years ago, someone opened that book just before Christmas and wrote those words to a child they loved. 🥹
And somehow, a century later, it was sitting on a shelf in rural Washington waiting to be found.
I couldn’t bear to leave them behind.
I keep wondering about all the bookshelves these books have graced over the last hundred years… the homes they lived in, the hands that turned their pages, the children who read them, the families who packed them into boxes and carried them from one chapter of life to another.
They’ve survived moves, changing generations, changing styles and an entire century and now they’ve found another little home on my repurposed mantle. 🤎
I’ve always loved old things, but especially the ones that come with a story. Things that are imperfect, worn and softened by time. Things that remind you that your home doesn’t have to be filled with something new to feel beautiful.
Sometimes the most special pieces are the ones that have already been loved.
And I think Milfred’s little book may be my favourite find of all. 📖✨
