The holiday season is a time for giving and gathering—but it can also bring an increase in waste. From decorations and food scraps to Christmas trees and wrapping paper, let's make this season merry and less wasteful!

Today is the day. We have rescinded Stage 4 water restrictions immediately.

The feeder main has been filled, water quality tested and we have successfully reconnected the main to the rest of the water distribution system.

We understand how difficult and disruptive these past four months have been, and we couldn’t have made all the necessary repairs without all of your sacrifice and support.

To the residents of Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Tsuut’ina Nation and Strathmore, THANK YOU❤️

AUGUST 8 update on the recovery from the critical watermain break impacting city-wide water use.

➡️ We are currently in Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions (calgary.ca/restrictions).

➡️ Yesterday we announced that new information has identified additional areas of the feeder main in need of urgent repair.
▪️ These repairs will take place between August 26 and the end of September.
▪️ In order to conduct these repairs, we will need to again shut down the South Bearspaw Feeder Main and stop the flow of water through it.
▪️ The majority of the work will be along a section of 33 Avenue N.W. There will also potentially be some work on Parkdale Blvd and we may also conduct additional repairs on 16 Avenue N.W.
▪️ Although our analysis is continuing, we are currently looking at 16 repair sites. However, this number may change as we finalize our analysis.

➡️ During the repair work, which will begin August 26, we will return to Stage 4 Outdoor Water Restrictions and we will be asking residents to take three specific actions:
▪️ Limit showers to three minutes
▪️ Skip flushes when you can
▪️ Only wash full loads of dishes and laundry.

➡️ Our next updates will be tomorrow (August 9) at calgary.ca/live.
▪️ 9 a.m. – Mayor Gondek livestream
▪️ 2 p.m. – Media availability

Starting today, we are moving to Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions

Last week we increased the flow of water in the feeder main to increase the water supply and were able to move to Stage 2 on July 18. After completing some required maintenance at the Bearspaw and Glenmore Water Treatment Plants on Monday, we are now able to move to Stage 1.

More sprinkler use is now allowed on certain days and times:

✅ Water with a sprinkler – for up to 2 hrs per week on certain days and times

📅Sprinkler schedule is based on address:

▪️ House numbers ending with an even number
Wednesday or Saturday

▪️ House numbers ending with an odd number
Thursday or Sunday

Sprinkler use is allowed in the morning or later in the evening to avoid evaporation during the hottest part of the day.

You can also do the following at any time:

✅ Water with a hose affixed with a trigger spray nozzle or drip irrigation
✅ Hand water with a watering can
✅ Water new grass with a sprinkler or irrigation system
✅ Water use for pesticide or fertilizer application

Avoid:

❌ Outdoor washing of cars, windows, exterior building surfaces, sidewalks, driveways or walkways
❌ Filling fountains or other decorative features (except bird baths🐦)

We are activating another pump tomorrow to further increase the flow through the pipe, and we will be monitoring the system and water supply and demand while considering whether to lift restrictions further.

Starting today, we are moving to Stage 2 Outdoor Water Restrictions

On Monday we increased the flow of water in the feeder main to 70% of its maximum speed in order to increase the amount of water we can supply. Since then, we have not detected any new issues.

Some sprinkler use is now allowed on certain days and times:

✅ Water with a sprinkler – for up to 1 hour per week on certain days and times

📅Sprinkler schedule is based on address:
House numbers ending with an even number
Either Wednesday or Saturday

House numbers ending with an odd number
Either Thursday or Sunday

We will continue to monitor the pipe over the weekend and that will help us determine when we can move to Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions.
