Another leg of my medical journey is now behind me and I'm home from the Courtenay/Comox hospital. I was a guest at that facility to have numerous kidney stones removed from both kidneys. While I have had kidney stones removed via a variety of procedures, having both kidneys done simultaneously was a bigger mountain to climb. To make it more complicated, I've been suffering from a particularly nasty bacterial infection in my urinary system This infection has been found to be antibiotic resistant, making any form of surgery quite risky. Some procedures have been posponed for many months because of this infection. I began a treatmen of antibiotics in early December whichhas run almost non-stop until today and beyond. The decision was made to proceed immediately on the stones after I collapsed at home with acute sepsis, sending me to hospital in Nanaimo for a few days. On March 11th, at 06:30 I gave myself over to the surgical team of Dr. Jeffery Zorn and staff. My wife Susan, and me were very concerned about the presence of the infection. It was a risk, after all. It was normally to have been 'day surgery' with the patient released after a brief rest in recovery and a chat with the doctor. I was sent to a private room in the surgical recovery ward to deal with my pain and discomfort.
Susan called to let me know that a great many of her friends and mine, all the same, really, had written and called to wish us both well. Hugh Semple had driven me to the hospital as Susan has a compressed disc and is very uncomfortable in the car; Offers of help were plentiful. The hospital its' staff were wonderful and the food was quite nice. Home made they said.
So I'm back home recovering, sleeping, and drinking lots of water to help flush all those shattered kidney stones from my body. Thank you all for your wonderful support as we struggled through this experience. You are all loved.
