A housing thought I’ve been kicking around.
Between 2021 and 2025, PEI invested approximately $10.3 million through the Affordable Housing Development Program, helping create 483 rental units.
What if a similar investment was directed toward preserving existing rental housing?
PEI has roughly 2,170 rental units in buildings constructed before 2000. Many are approaching the point where major capital work is required, including roofs, windows, heating systems, plumbing, electrical upgrades, and building envelope repairs.
At $1,000 per unit annually for five years, government could invest roughly $10.85 million into preserving existing rental housing across the Island while creating steady work for local contractors, suppliers, tradespeople, and apprentices.
This wouldn’t replace new housing programs. It would complement them.
We spend a lot of time discussing how to create new units. Should we also be talking more about preserving the ones we already have?
