Saskatchewan winters can be un-bear-ably cold – you just want to put on extra layers, cozy up in a den and wait it out.
Bears have the right idea, but those long months of hibernation require preparation. Through fall, bears eat more to store fat, a phenomenon called hyperphagia. Some of their regular food sources - such as berries and other vegetation – may become scarce in autumn, causing bears to get adventurous in their food-finding missions.
Prevent bears from wandering into your yard by keeping temptation to a minimum. Keep your outdoor spaces clear of delightful smelling bear attractants – pet food, garbage and dirty grills can attract bears into your yard. If a bear can’t find anything to eat, it will move along in the ongoing quest for calories.
If you encounter a bear, keep your distance and don’t scare it away. Instead, make a wide detour and calmly back away while speaking in a low voice.
