I don’t normally make posts like this, but after receiving two calls in one week from homeowners dealing with very similar roofing situations, I want people to be aware that this is happening in our area.
Both homeowners hired a roofing company after finding them online. Once the shingles were removed, they were told there were major problems with the wood and that it all needed to be replaced. The price of the job then jumped dramatically into the $30,000 to $40,000 range.
This morning I received another call from a homeowner who thankfully stopped the work and reached out for a second opinion.
I inspected the roof today and found several issues with the work that had already been done. We made sure the roof was watertight so she could take some time and decide how to move forward.
Sometimes unexpected problems do come up once a roof is opened up, and additional work can add to the cost. But needing plywood replaced should not suddenly make your roofing price 3–4x the original quote.
Please be careful. Ask questions. Ask to see what they are telling you needs to be replaced. Get any additional costs in writing. Never pay the full amount upfront before the work has been completed. And if something doesn’t feel right, stop and get a second opinion.
Please keep an eye out for your parents, grandparents and neighbours too. This is the second call I’ve received in one week, and I hate seeing people put in these situations.
