With my Green Real Estate Designation, I focus on real estate through a broader and more technical lens. A truly green home is not defined by solar panels alone or Energy Star appliances. It is defined by how efficiently it is designed, or renovated, how healthy it is to live in, how much energy and water it actually uses, and how little impact it has on the environment over time.

In many parts of Europe, this approach is standard. Homes are designed from the start or from renovations to be energy efficient, environmentally responsible, and cost effective to operate. High performance envelopes, clean indoor air, low energy demand, and long term durability are expected, not marketed as upgrades.

In Canada, we are still in a transition phase. Sustainable design is emerging, but it is often treated as a bonus rather than the baseline. Yet buyers are becoming more informed. Rising energy costs, climate resilience, and health are changing how people evaluate homes.
