What I Learned This Week…

Never Forget What Shaped You

This week, I found myself thinking about the past—not because I want to live there, but because every now and then, I think we need to remember what brought us to where we are.

The older I get, the more I realize that some moments never really leave us. Certain places, people, experiences, and even ordinary days become woven into who we are. At the time, we don't always realize their significance. Sometimes it takes years before we understand just how much they shaped us.

When I look back at my own journey, I can see pieces of myself everywhere.

In the place I come from. In the people who loved me, believed in me, challenged me, and stood beside me. In the people I miss. In the chances I took, the mistakes I made, the disappointments I worked through, and the times life didn't go quite the way I thought it would.

Some experiences never really leave us. Our successes, struggles, mistakes, and unexpected turns all leave something behind. Together, they help make us who we are.

I've learned from the good times, but some of my greatest lessons came from the difficult ones.

There have been moments of happiness and love, but also moments of fear, uncertainty, loss, and change. Experiences that made me stop, reassess what mattered, and see life a little differently.

And through it all, I've learned how much the ordinary things matter.

Home. Family. Friends. Familiar places. A conversation with someone you love. The comfort of knowing where you belong. The people and places that remind you where you came from.

We spend so much of our lives looking ahead—planning the next chapter, chasing the next goal, wondering what's around the corner. I'm guilty of that too.

But this week reminded me that there's value in looking back once in a while.

Not with regret.
Not wishing we could change it.
But with gratitude for the journey that got us here.

Because even the chapters we wouldn't choose to relive helped write the person we are today.

Never forget where you've been.
Never forget the people who were there.
Never forget the moments that changed you.
And never forget what shaped you.

Remembering isn't about living in the past.

It's about carrying the lessons forward, appreciating how far you've come, holding a little tighter to the people and places that matter, and never taking an ordinary day for granted. ❤️

I never forget September 11. It was my mom’s birthday.
Twenty-five years ago today, after calling her to wish her a happy birthday, I turned on the TV while getting ready for my afternoon college classes. I had decided the year before to go back to school and add to my education.
When I first saw that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, I honestly thought I was watching a trailer for a new movie. Then I watched the second plane hit.
In that moment, I realized this was real.
My thoughts immediately went to my family in New York. One was a firefighter. Another worked in an office building in Long Island City, and I later learned that he had actually watched one of the planes fly past his window.
I tried calling New York, but my calls wouldn't connect. Eventually, I got through and learned that everyone in my family was safe. Thank God.
Going to college that afternoon was surreal. I had never seen so many black Suburbans in St. John’s. It seemed like they had come out of nowhere. There was security at the entrance to the college—something virtually unheard of in Newfoundland at the time.
There was a heaviness everywhere. We were all trying to comprehend what we had just witnessed. Classes were understandably subdued, and much of the day was spent watching or listening to the news as we learned about the other crashes and the unimaginable loss that was unfolding.
Twenty-five years later, I can still remember exactly how that day felt.
September 11 will always carry two very different emotions for me—the memory of my mom’s birthday and the memory of a day that changed the world.
Today, I remember my mom, and I remember all those who lost their lives, the families whose lives changed forever, and the first responders who ran toward danger when everyone else was trying to escape.
Some days in history are never just dates on a calendar. September 11 is one of them.
Never forgotten. ❤️

What I Learned This Week…

It’s okay to be proud of your accomplishments.

I’ve never been someone who spends much time looking back at the things I’ve accomplished. I’m usually too busy thinking about what needs to be done next. But sometimes you need to stop long enough to realize just how much work, determination and life went into getting you to where you are.

This week I realized that maybe we all need to give ourselves a little more credit.

We are often so focused on the next goal or the next challenge that we forget there was once a time when, where we are today was somewhere we were hoping to be.

Your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Your accomplishments don’t have to be bigger than someone else’s to matter. We all have our own mountains to climb, and sometimes just making it through the hard parts is an accomplishment in itself.

Keep pushing forward. Keep setting goals. Keep believing there is more ahead for you.

But every once in a while, stop and look back at how far you’ve come.

You might just surprise yourself. ❤️
