Bank of Canada cuts rates to 2.50%

The Bank of Canada has lowered its policy rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%. This is the first cut since March and signals a move into what the Bank calls the “neutral” range for rates.

Why now?

Q2 GDP fell about 1.5%, showing the economy has slowed.

Unemployment has climbed to 7.1%, with losses in trade-sensitive industries.

Inflation is under better control: headline CPI is ~1.9%, with core measures between 2.4% and 3%.

What this means for Canadians:

Variable and HELOC borrowers: Expect a modest drop in interest costs as lenders adjust prime rates.

Fixed-rate borrowers: These depend more on bond yields, which may or may not move in step.

Market tone: Lowering the rate should help support confidence as we head into the fall real estate season.

📌 My take: This is a steady, fact-based move — not panic, not politics. For buyers, sellers, or renewals, the smart step is to run your numbers again and stress-test at +0.50–1.00% so you’re ready for either direction.
