At Oaklands by the Lake, we are striving to facilitate the much-needed diversity in the Quamichan lake neighbourhood without disrupting the natural habitat while also complementing the existing developments and homes in the area.

Communities see the value of supporting infill housing because:

- it increases rental and homeownership options in neighbourhoods;
- it makes efficient use of existing municipal infrastructure; and
policies and bylaws can help maintain the scale and character of a neighbourhood.

Infill housing could include:

- building a new home on an empty lot;
- adding secondary suites, carriage homes and laneway homes (garden suite or "granny flat");
- replacing a single-detached home with a duplex or a fourplex; or
- subdividing an existing lot to allow the construction of additional units.

As we age, most older adults will consider the option of downsizing or moving to a smaller space. Roughly 51 percent of retirees ages 50 and over move into smaller homes but many older adults don't want to move. Sixty-four percent of seniors say they plan to stay in their current homes. Whether you choose to stay in your home or move, housing is an important topic as we age.

While Quamichan Lake is considered an urban lake, lying as it does within Duncan’s city limits, it rarely feels like it, parts of it are indeed quite wild and beautiful. One can easily spend an afternoon, or possibly an entire day, exploring this unique and picturesque lake.

Oaklands by the Lake will be an ideal spot for the community to enjoy the natural beauty of Quamichan Lake through multiple preserved green spaces.

Quamichan Lake played host to the National Rowing Championships for the first time last weekend, with over 250 athletes from 45 different clubs racing in North Cowichan on November 11 and 12.

National Champions were crowned in singles and pairs events, and two new trophies named after RCA alumni were awarded for the first time to the National Champions in the lightweight events.

Congratulations to these amazing athletes and a huge thank you to all who showed up to support them!

We are so happy to welcome our new neighbors and celebrate their achievements!

“Aging in place” means staying in your own home and community as you get older.

Thinking about how your housing needs may change as you age, and making sure your home is suitable is a good way to plan for the years to come.

Many seniors choose to downsize, find a home with few stairs or live close to shops and transportation services. These choices can all help people live in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

At Oaklands by the Lake, this is what we love to see!

"On a personal note, I am the principal of this project and also a mother, grandmother, and local to the Cowichan Valley.

I have been seeing the struggles that all sectors of our community are wrestling with finding appropriate affordable housing.

I also see the stresses and impact current development practices have been having for future generations on the local environment.

This project was started as my personal quest to "raise the bar" so to speak, help our community while preserving green spaces and sharing the beauty and positive aspects of a community node with others.

This is about creating home spaces and providing community.

I do not feel that we are a "developer" - this is a maiden project which we took on with the desire to help our local community and residents. "

Some of the neighboring properties are connected to a sanitary and sewage main. However, there are 20 property lots that use septic fields instead. Most of these properties are in close proximity to Quamichan Lake. As sewage is placed underground more nutrients reach the water table and enter the lake, contributing to the algae bloom.

To mitigate this, it is proposed that a lift station is built for the sewage capacity of these 20 lots as part of the Oaklands by the Lake development project.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
