🇵🇱 On September 1, 1939, 87 years ago, Germany invaded Poland, marking the beginning of World War II. Before this, under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, which divided spheres of influence in Central Europe between Berlin and Moscow, it had been agreed that the Soviet Union would also attack Poland — which it did just two weeks later.
🕯️ Despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered by its enemies, Poland — a nation that had regained its independence just two decades earlier — defended itself for 36 days. By comparison, France held out for 46 days. Today, we honor all Polish soldiers and Allied forces who fought during World War II, standing against German aggression. We remember all those who fought for freedom and human dignity.
🕊️ In Poland, in particular, we honor the memory of approximately six million Polish citizens who were killed between 1939 and 1945, including three million Polish Jews. Two million of these victims were left orphaned in Poland after the war. Today, we especially hold their sacrifice in our prayers.
⚖️ It should also be emphasized that 87 years after Germany unleashed World War II, the issue of reparations from Berlin to Warsaw remains unresolved. Polish soldiers who fought and sacrificed themselves during the war were also accused of misconduct during the conflict.
