QUEEN ALEXANDRA 🏡

The northern portion of Queen Alexandra formed part of the original Town of Strathcona, which was incorporated in 1899, and subdivision soon followed. Strathcona experienced strong growth prior to World War I, and much of the area north of University Avenue to Whyte Avenue was developed rapidly. Single-family residences dominated, but commercial land uses in the area of Whyte Avenue and 104th Street were also established as Strathcona’s commercial district began to develop. The bulk of development south of University Avenue occurred during the 1940s and later.

Residential redevelopment has been a significant component of land use change over the last decade as single-family homes are replaced with higher density residential forms such as low-rise apartments and condominiums. The neighbourhood’s proximity to Whyte Avenue, the University of Alberta (U of A), and the U of A hospital — all major employment centres and significant destinations within the city — has made Queen Alexandra a convenient neighbourhood to live, shop, work, and play.

The northern part of the neighbourhood contains most of the commercial land uses, and Whyte Avenue, which forms the neighbourhood’s northern boundary, is a significant city-wide activity node and a shopping and entertainment destination. Institutional land uses are prominent throughout Queen Alexandra. The neighbourhood contains several schools, parks, sports facilities, and religious assemblies.

The area was named for Queen Alexandra (1844–1925), the wife of King Edward VII of England. The date the neighbourhood received its name is not definitively known. The neighbourhood may have been named in 1901 at the time of King Edward’s accession when Alexandra became queen. Alternatively, the neighbourhood may have been named to coincide with the renaming of the Duggan Street School in 1910.

ROYAL GARDENS 🏡

Royal Gardens is a mature suburban neighbourhood located in the Petrolia subdivision of south-central Edmonton. The neighbourhood is predominantly residential, and it was developed for the most part during the 1960s with single-family structures. Multi-family complexes border 40th Avenue and 122nd Street; both thoroughfares have good transit connections.

Four schools are located in Royal Gardens. The high schools are situated on the same site as a large recreational area, which includes Confederation Pool, and serve students from surrounding neighbourhoods.

Commercial development within the neighbourhood is limited, but residents can easily access a variety of businesses in either Greenfield, the neighbourhood to the south, or at the nearby Southgate Centre shopping mall.

This neighbourhood may have been named after Joseph Royal (1837-1902), who was the lieutenant governor of the Northwest Territories between 1888 and 1893. Royal Gardens has been the name for this area since 1912, but the name was officially adopted in 1962.

KENILWORTH 🏡

Kenilworth is located on land annexed to the City of Edmonton in 1960. The southern portion of the annexation, which lies along the CPR right-of-way to Fort Saskatchewan, became an industrial subdivision. The Kenilworth neighbourhood is located in the northern portion of the annexed land.

Kenilworth is predominantly a residential area, with the exception of a commercial corridor along Whyte (82nd) Avenue at the southern boundary. The businesses in this corridor are not oriented towards the neighbourhood; they draw on a wide trade area for their clientele, and are separated from residential development by a landscaped buffer at the eastern end of the neighbourhood. Most commercial buildings in the area were built during the 1970s.

The majority of structures in Kenilworth are owner-occupied single-detached dwellings built during the 1960s. A small number of two-, three-, and four-unit housing structures are scattered through the neighbourhood. A central school/park site defines the core of the neighbourhood. Kenilworth has three schools, two major parks, and a sports facility (the Kenilworth Arena). Since Kenilworth is bounded on each side with a major traffic routes, neighbourhood residents have good road access to several major shopping and employment centres.

This neighbourhood was named in the early 1900s and appears on some of the earliest maps of Edmonton. Kenilworth was named after the town and castle of Kenilworth in Warwickshire, England. The castle of Kenilworth was built in 1122.

SHERWOOD PARK 🏡

The hamlet and urban service area of Sherwood Park is located in Strathcona County, east of Edmonton. The hamlet is bounded by Yellowhead Highway to the north, Wye Road to the south, Highway 21 to the east, and Anthony Henday Drive to the west. Some business and residential areas extend above Yellowhead Highway and below Wye Road.

In 1952, John Hook Campbell and John Mitchell planned to build a town for the oil field workers in the area. The project was approved by the Strathcona Municipal Council in 1953, and Sherwood Park was established on a section of farmland by 1954. In a county plebiscite in 1987, residents elected to maintain their single local government and their status as a hamlet. The county was designated a specialized municipality by the Province of Alberta in 1996, allowing it to receive grants and provincial benefits. As of 2012, Strathcona County had a population of 65,465 residents living in Sherwood Park.

There are 17 public and seven Catholic schools in Sherwood Park operating under Elk Island Public Schools and Elk Island Catholic Schools, respectively. Sherwood Park has 37 parks and sports fields, as well as numerous recreational facilities. Millennium Place, a multi-purpose recreation centre, offers a swimming pool two ice arenas, gyms, workout areas, drop-in sports classes, and areas for children and youth.

Other facilities include the Broadmoor Arena, Glen Allan Recreation Complex, Kinsmen Leisure Centre, Sherwood Park Arena/Sports Centre, and Strathcona Athletic Park. The southwest portion of Sherwood Park contains the community centre, Strathona County Library, Sherwood Park Mall, Broadmoor Lake Park, and Festival Place, a 500-seat theatre with over 500 professional arts, dance, theatre, film, and community events.

The name Sherwood Park came about in 1956 when Canada Post would not approve the names Campbelltown or Campbell Park for the hamlet, as several other communities in Canada had similar names. It is possible that the developers were thinking of the area’s forests.
