For many years, Alberta had two major telephone systems. Alberta Government Telephones served communities across the province, while the City of Edmonton operated its own telephone company within Edmonton.

The South Tower at ATB Place was completed in 1971 as AGT’s headquarters, while the building now known as 44 Capital Boulevard was home to Edmonton Telephones.

More than 50 years later, the two buildings are connected again through shared ownership, bringing their closely related histories together in an unexpected way.

Every morning looks a little different from ATB Place.

One of the perks of working downtown is watching the city wake up. As the sun rises over Edmonton, the skyline catches the light and reminds us why we love calling this place home.

See that black grate being lifted off the hive? That’s called a queen excluder.

The openings are just large enough for worker bees to pass through, but too small for the larger queen. It’s placed between sections of the hive to keep the queen in the brood area, where she lays her eggs, while worker bees can still travel into the boxes above to store honey.

That separation is important when it comes time to harvest. It helps keep the honeycomb in the upper boxes free of brood, so beekeepers know those frames are for honey rather than raising the next generation of bees.

Such a simple piece of equipment, but a pretty clever way to manage what happens inside a busy hive.

Get ready for the Oilers’ home opener with a special Hot Stove conversation featuring Craig MacTavish. The four-time Stanley Cup champion, former Oilers captain, and head coach will join us at ATB Place to share stories from his career, memorable moments, and experiences in the game.

The event will take place on Thursday, September 24, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM in the Tenant Lounge. ATB Place tenants can enter the draw through the Access App for the chance to attend in person. Those randomly selected can enjoy coffee, tea, and an Oilers-themed cookie while being part of the conversation with Craig. Those who are not selected will receive a link to watch the event live.

Have a question for Craig? Submit it when entering the draw, and it may be selected for the conversation.

Craig MacTavish is coming to ATB Place. Join us on September 24 for a live Hot Stove Chat featuring stories and insights from Craig’s remarkable NHL career, including his years as a player, captain and head coach with the Edmonton Oilers.

ATB Place tenants can visit the Access app to enter the draw for the chance to attend in person and receive the livestream link. Tenants are also invited to wear their Oilers jerseys that day as we get ready for the home opener.

Meet Michael Sousa! 👋

Michael is a Building Operator at ATB Place and an important part of the team that keeps things running smoothly each day. You may also recognize him from our tenant events, where he is always willing to lend a hand.

Some of Michael’s fondest memories at ATB Place have come from helping with these events, especially handing out ice cream during Tenant Appreciation events.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys hiking with his wife and travelling, particularly to the Caribbean during the winter.

For more than 50 years, ATB Place has been a recognizable part of Edmonton's skyline and a destination for the people who work, visit, and connect here each day. As one of downtown's landmark office properties, it has evolved alongside the city, adapting to meet the needs of each new generation.

Today, that evolution continues. Behind the construction fencing, ATB Place is being thoughtfully reimagined with the future in mind while preserving the character and history that have made it a familiar part of Edmonton for decades. Change takes time, but each step brings us closer to the next chapter of this iconic property.

We look forward to sharing that journey with you.

The votes are in! Carleen Ross has been selected by ATB Place tenants as the featured artist for our upcoming exhibition with helloart.

Carleen is a Canadian artist whose work explores hope, purpose and the connection between humans, animals and the natural world. Her artwork has been featured in solo exhibitions, major festivals and international exhibitions.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our first round of tenant voting. Watch for Carleen’s artwork arriving at ATB Place!
