Double-Tapped Breakers
Not as cool as it sounds 😂
A “double tap” simply means two wires are connected to a single breaker terminal.
Is it a big deal? Usually not — but it depends on the breaker.
Some breakers, including certain Square D models, are specifically designed and rated to accept two conductors. In that case, there’s nothing wrong with it.
Most breakers, however, are designed for only one conductor. When they’re double tapped, the wires may not be properly secured, which can lead to a loose connection and overheating.
Fortunately, when it is a defect, it’s typically a straightforward repair for a licensed electrician.
Bottom line: Two wires on one breaker doesn’t automatically mean there’s a problem. The breaker and how it was installed matter. ⚡🏠
