Truth
FYI, a lot of food labels are just marketing.
- There is no such thing as added hormones in poultry or pork. In beef, they are allowed but there’s only a fraction of a billionth of a gram difference in the beef itself. The dose makes the poison- you would need to eat about 16,000 pounds of beef every single day for it to negatively affect you. Nothing we need to worry about.
- Also, all meat is antibiotic free. I was a commercial scale farmer for nearly a decade. Any livestock farmer will tell you - if we use them (which we all try not to, but sometimes it is necessary for their health) there is a withdrawal period before the animal goes to market, which means all meat is antibiotic free.
- There’s not much of a difference between grass fed. It’s true that grass finished is “slightly” (again, we are talking nanograms difference) higher in omega 3, but grain finished is “slightly” higher in omega 6. They are nutritionally about the same, give or take. Some states or regions are just fortunate to have the CLIMATE to raise grass finished year round! When I raised cattle in Iowa we did not have that luxury. Snow fed beef doesn’t go over well 🙃 haha.
Any farmer can do a great job regardless of size or marketing label. Personally, I buy based on LOCAL first and foremost; know your farmer. HONESTY in marketing, cost, reputation, quality and flavor. Hope that helps - lots of great choices 🙂
