Welcome to Don’t Clean Your House – Part 3!

Before you start scrubbing baseboards with a toothbrush, take a look at all those little jobs you’ve been meaning to get around to.

🚪 That door that only closes if you lift it, pull it and whisper something nice to it.

🔨 That loose railing or rotten deck board that has buyers playing Tetris with their lives.

💡 And all those little “quirks” that require an instruction manual on how to survive your house.

Buyers notice these things — and some of them can become a potential liability too.

So before listing, finish the unfinished. Your TO-DO list needs to become your TO-DONE list!

Sellers — STOP cleaning your house! 🛑

Okay, yes… still clean it. 😂 But before you start scrubbing baseboards, let’s talk about YOUR STUFF.

Too much furniture, crowded countertops and jam-packed closets can make your house feel smaller — but it can also completely distract buyers from what they’re actually there to see.

I don't want to have to keep refocusing buyers because they're admiring your extensive Beanie Baby collection, family photos from the ’80s or your NASCAR die-cast display. 😂

And yes — buyers WILL open your closets. If everything you removed from the rest of the house falls on their head when they open the door, we haven't really decluttered. 😂

Pack some of it up! You’re moving anyway.

We want buyers looking at your HOUSE — not your stuff.

Sellers — STOP cleaning your house! 🛑

Okay, kidding. 😂 Please clean your house.

But before you start obsessing over every little detail, let’s talk about what buyers notice FIRST.

👃 #1 — SMELL.

We become nose-blind to our own homes. Pets, laundry, last night’s supper, a funky shoe closet or that musty basement — you might not smell it anymore, but buyers will.

Phone a friend! An HONEST one that will tell you what they SMELL.

And trying to cover it up with a house full of air fresheners? That can make buyers wonder what you’re hiding.

Clean and neutral. That’s what we want.

Sellers… we need to talk about KEYS.

If it has a lock, it needs a key. Or a code. Or SOME way for the buyer to actually open the darn thing. 😂

Front door? 🔑
Back door? 🔑
Garage? 🔑
Shed? 🔑
That weird side door nobody has opened since 2007? YEP. THAT ONE TOO.

And PLEASE… don’t leave the buying agent a giant frickin’ key ring with 27 completely random, unlabelled keys and expect us to solve the magical mystery of what key fits what door.

This one? Nope.
This one? Nope.
What about this tiny gold one from 1987? WHO KNOWS?! 😂

LABEL. THE. KEYS.

And if you don’t have one? Call a locksmith, rekey the lock or replace it. It could cost you a couple hundred bucks, but the buyer needs to be able to access what they just bought.

It’s such a little thing — but it can hold up a pre-closing inspection and cause a whole lot of unnecessary closing-day drama.

🔑 If it has a lock, it needs a key!
