NB Power wants to make it less profitable for new solar owners to sell power back to the grid.

Currently, if your solar panels produce extra power, NB Power basically "swaps" it with you one-for-one.

These new rules would change that relationship from a fair trade to a buy-low/sell-high model that favors the utility.

Here is the breakdown of what these changes actually mean for you:

1. The "Sell Low, Buy High" Switch
Right now, if you give the grid 1kWh of power, they take 1kWh off your bill (a 1:1 trade). Under the new Net Billing plan:
• When you buy power from them, you pay full price.
• When you sell your extra solar power to them, they pay you a lower "wholesale" rate.
• The Result: Your solar panels won't lower your bill as quickly as they used to.

2. A More Complicated Bill (The Three-Part Rate)
Instead of just paying for the electricity you use, new solar customers will see three different charges:
• Service Charge: A flat monthly fee just to be connected.
• Energy Charge: The cost for the total amount of power you used.
• Demand Charge: A "peak usage" fee. If you turn on your dryer, oven, and EV charger all at the exact same time, you get hit with a fee for that high "burst" of power, even if it only happened once.

3. The "Grandfather" Clause
If you already have solar, or if you get your application in and approved before November 1, 2026, these new rules shouldn't apply to you. You get to keep the old, better deal.

4. Better News for Big Buildings and Groups
While individual homeowners are getting a tougher deal, big projects got a boost:
• Higher Limits: Businesses can now build much larger solar arrays (up from 100 kW to 500 kW).
• Virtual Net Metering: This allows people who can’t put panels on their own roof (like apartment dwellers) to buy into a solar project located somewhere else and get credit on their bill.

5. The "Wait and See" on Costs
NB Power is asking for permission to change the rules now, but they haven't said exactly how much the new fees or the lower "export credit" will be yet. We won't know the final math until 2027.

Summary for a homeowner: If you’ve been thinking about going solar in New Brunswick, the clock is ticking. Getting in before November 2026 likely means saving significantly more money over the lifespan of your system compared to waiting.

Are you currently considering a solar installation, or are you already a net-metering customer?
