December 20 to December 27 holds deep significance in Sikh history, as it commemorates key events of resilience, sacrifice, and faith. These days are marked by two pivotal historical events:
Shaheedi of the Chaar Sahibzaade (Martyrdom of the Four Sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji):
Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, and his family faced immense persecution at the hands of the Mughal Empire during this period.
• Sahibzaada Ajit Singh (18 years) and Sahibzaada Jujhar Singh (14 years): On December 22, 1705 (according to the Gregorian calendar), the two elder sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji valiantly fought in the Battle of Chamkaur against a massive Mughal army. They achieved martyrdom while defending their faith and the Khalsa principles.
• Sahibzaada Zorawar Singh (9 years) and Sahibzaada Fateh Singh (6 years): The two younger sons, along with their grandmother Mata Gujri Ji, were captured and taken to Sirhind by the Mughal authorities. They refused to convert to Islam and were sentenced to death by being bricked alive on December 27, 1705. Their sacrifice is a testament to their unwavering commitment to Sikh values.
These sacrifices highlight the strength of the Sikh community in upholding righteousness, justice, and freedom of religion, even in the face of extreme oppression.
2. The day Guru Gobind Singh Ji left the fortress of Anandpur Sahib under an oath of safety given by the Mughal rulers, which was later betrayed. This led to the separation of Guru Ji’s family, resulting in their immense sacrifices. These events are closely connected to the martyrdoms that followed
These days remind Sikhs of their rich heritage of courage, sacrifice, and standing firm for justice and righteousness. They also inspire reflection on the importance of faith and principles in the face of adversity.
