Let’s talk about accessibility at Saltwater Manor!

We have sought advice in the past from Lisa from Access YYT on how to do what we can to make Saltwater Manor more accessible to more guests. And Lisa’s biggest takeaway was that we should be transparent about the accessibility features we have and the accessibility features we’re lacking - so any potential guests can make an informed decision about whether Saltwater Manor will work for their needs.

We usually refer to Saltwater Manor as “limited mobility friendly.” We use that term because the house has many accessibility features that work for guests with disabilities who are ambulatory and older guests who might struggle with things like climbing stairs, but we aren’t fully wheelchair accessible.

Saltwater Manor has a small ramp at the entrance, everything on ground level (except the loft bedroom area which is 1 of 5 bedrooms), space for a wheelchair to navigate the rooms, a walk-in shower with a shower stool in the ensuite, some accessible daily living aids like removable handrails for tubs, an extra shower bench, handrails for the toilet and more. In the kitchen we have appliances in easy reach as well as a counter in the butler pantry that can be wheeled under for any food prep needs.

What we don’t have is a roll-in shower, hoist for the hot tub or ramp to the back deck. Which we know is limiting to certain guests with disabilities who are not ambulatory. We’re working on updating a few more things to add more accessibility features in the near future - like a portable ramp that can be used to access the back deck.

We’ll keep you posted as we improve the accessibility of Saltwater Manor. And in the meantime you can find detailed accessibility features listed on our website so you can make an informed decision about your stay.

We can also provide our guests with detailed info on places in the area to visit/dine/shop that are wheelchair accessible.

One of our fav people recently spent some time at Saltwater Manor with her lovely book club so they could spend a weekend relaxing, reading and catching up.

We love hosting reading and writing retreats at Saltwater Manor. We think our spacious home with room for up to 12 guests along with the panoramic ocean views combine to create the perfect ambience for this type of gathering.

We have limited availability remaining for the summer but there are still a few dates if you’re looking for a summer getaway with friends or family.

And we think there’s no better time for a reading or writing retreat than the fall and winter seasons, with our reduced off-season rates, wood-burning fireplace, hot tub overlooking the ocean and more.

Let me set a scene for you.

It’s winter in Newfoundland. You’re over all the shovelling and feeling like you’re stuck at home. You decide you need a break, so you message your friends and book a weekend at Saltwater Manor. It’s not far from the city but it’s just far enough to make it feel like a real escape.

It’s your first night there. You all settle into your rooms and then gather around the kitchen island to prepare a meal together. You cook, you drink, you laugh. You sit at the table, light some candles and enjoy the good food and the even better company.

After supper you move to the living room, light a fire in the large wood-burning fireplace and reminisce some more. You look out the panoramic windows facing the ocean and you notice the Northern Lights have come out to play.

You all rush to your bedrooms to change into your swimsuits and then you make your way outside to the hot tub. The air is crisp and the slight breeze on your face is welcoming as you sink into the warm water. As the jets start up you sit back to watch the lights dance above the ocean, together.

You know it’s going to be a weekend to remember.
