Halloween Traditions: Bringing Family Together

Halloween has always been a special time in the van Leenen household—it’s a holiday we go all out for, year after year. 🎃 From decking out the house with spooky decorations to pumpkin carving, we make sure to celebrate the season in style. One of our favorite traditions is roasting pumpkin seeds and baking special Halloween treats together as a family.

When the kids were younger, we would hit the neighborhood for trick-or-treating—memories that will stay with us forever. Now that they are older, we throw costume parties with themed treats and fun drinks. We still come together every year to keep the traditions alive, from carving pumpkins to enjoying all the festive baking.

There’s something about Autumn that truly brings our household together, and Halloween has always been the highlight of the season. 🍂👻

In our household, parenting was always about creating a foundation of trust, respect, and communication. Every one of my children received 15-30 minutes of one-on-one time with me, ensuring they felt valued as individuals. We worked on building their confidence through powerful "I am" statements and maintaining an environment where they felt safe, respected, and free to express their thoughts.

I never believed in enforcing curfews. Instead, I emphasized responsibility and commitment. If my children told me they would be home by 11 PM, I trusted them to honor their word and wake me when they returned, no matter the time. This approach fostered accountability and mutual respect, which allowed them to navigate the world confidently.

Parenting, for me, was about guiding my children to become strong communicators, unafraid to take charge and lead in their own right. My goal was always to raise them to be individuals who know their worth, can express themselves without fear, and lead with confidence in today’s world.

🚀 Off to New Adventures 🚀 My daughters, Jadyn and Caleigh are off to University! Jadyn is in her first year at McGill University taking a Bachelors of Biological, Biomedical and Life Sciences and Caleigh is in her 3rd year of studies at the University of Western Ontario taking a Honours Specialization in Genetics with a Minor in Digital Humanities. My Son, Josiah is working on-site at Nolita, assisting in bringing our vision to life. As a dad, I couldn’t be prouder of each of them for carving out their own paths and continuing to pursue their passions. Here’s to hard work, dedication, and making dreams a reality! 💪

My goal has always been to be the best coach on the field, teaching my players how to win, and then to be the best coach off the field, guiding them for life. In today’s world, it's crucial to teach the reality and honesty of life—no one ever said it would be easy! In fact, sometimes, it’s incredibly hard. But to be successful, you must be on time, work harder than anyone else, be fully committed to the cause, and live with passion, intention, and intensity. Focus on your goals, pour your heart and soul into them, and give it everything you’ve got!

The message may have started on the football field, but the real lesson was always about how to live your life. I’ve always believed that your worth isn’t determined by what you do on the field, but by what you do off it—and that everyone is equal and just as important as the next.

I’m proud to partner with Nolan Ulm as he started the Make It Happen camp. Nolan is a visionary and a leader with a true intention of giving back and helping those who seek guidance. I’m honored to be a part of this camp as his business partner and mentor.
