The Sutton Fair Is Over — Is Your Property Ready for Fall?
Around Georgina, there are certain traditions that seem to mark the seasons.
For many of us, the Sutton Fair & Horse Show is one of them. Once the midway lights go out, the vendors pack up and another Sutton Fair comes to an end, it feels like one of those local signs that summer is starting to wind down.
We may still have plenty of warm days ahead, but now is the time to start thinking about your fall property cleanup and preparing your gardens for winter.
Don’t Wait Until the Leaves Are Already Down
Fall cleanup doesn’t have to begin after every leaf has fallen.
Late summer is actually a great time to walk around your property and see what will need attention over the next couple of months.
Look for:
* Overgrown garden beds
* Perennials that need dividing
* Plants that need pruning or cutting back
* Weeds that should be removed before they go to seed
* Dead or damaged branches
* Garden beds that need fresh edging or mulch
* Lawn areas that struggled through the summer
* Leaves and debris beginning to collect around the property
Taking care of these jobs gradually can make the final fall cleanup much easier.
Start Preparing Your Gardens for Winter
Our gardens here in Georgina have to deal with everything an Ontario winter can throw at them.
Preparing them properly in the fall can make a big difference when spring arrives.
Depending on the plants and property, fall garden preparation may include cutting back certain perennials, dividing overcrowded plants such as hostas, removing weeds and diseased plant material, cleaning and edging beds, and applying mulch where appropriate.
It’s also a good opportunity to look at what worked in your gardens this year—and what you may want to change next spring.
Your Lawn Needs Some Attention Too
After months of summer heat, foot traffic and dry periods, your lawn may be showing some wear.
Continuing regular mowing while the grass is actively growing, keeping leaves from smothering the turf and cleaning up fallen debris can help your lawn head into winter in better condition.
And remember: don’t scalp your lawn just because fall is coming.
Get Ahead of the Fall Rush
Once the leaves really begin falling, landscaping crews get busy quickly.
Planning your fall cleanup in Georgina early gives you time to decide what needs to be done and get your property onto the schedule before the busiest part of the season arrives.
