Most families assume they’ll find their ideal cottage in one season. Which can happen.

But what I see is more like 2-3 summers.

The reason? A cottage isn’t judged by the same criteria as your home.

The timeline is emotional, not just functional. There’s no school zone forcing the decision, just how many more summers the kids will still want to come.

On Georgian Bay, most cottages are boat access only, no road, no bridge, so that commute is also part of what you’re buying. If you’re not there, can the family still get to and from the cottage?

It usually sells furnished because moving it all by water is its own project.

And you’re buying what you can build, not just what’s there. Room for a bunkie, room to sever the lot, room for the next generation.

So if buying a cottage is on your mind this fall, the first thing I’d have you do is review your why, before you start viewing cottages.

That’s the part nobody tells you: the criteria you start with isn’t the criteria you finish with.
