Vancouver Island Market Report for Q1

📈Market activity through the early months of the year was subdued, in
part as buyers digested the implications of the landmark Cowichan
decision, the first Canadian court ruling to declare Aboriginal title over
privately held property. The Vancouver Island region sits on unceded
territory with no concluded treaties, making the decision difficult to
ignore. Local buyers and most existing BC property owners digested the
news relatively quickly, already subject to the underlying reality of
unresolved Aboriginal title. Out-of-province buyers, particularly from
Alberta where historical treaties provide certainty around free-hold title
ownership, have been more cautious.

Campfires are back for the long weekend. 🔥

B.C.’s South Coast campfire ban is being lifted just in time for the Victoria Day long weekend. The Coastal Fire Centre says cooler weather, better humidity, and lower wildfire risk mean small campfires will be allowed again starting Friday, May 15 at noon.

The ban was notable because it was the earliest South Coast campfire restriction since records began in 2003. Larger fires are still not allowed, and broader fire restrictions remain in place across many parts of B.C.
