The City of Lloydminster is encouraging residents to take steps to protect their properties as forecasts call for periods of steady rainfall throughout the weekend.

Forecasts are calling for up to 25 millimetres of rain on both Saturday and Sunday. While the City does not anticipate widespread drainage issues, officials say a few simple preventative measures can help reduce the risk of localized flooding and support the storm drainage system.

Residents are encouraged to:

• Clear leaves, grass clippings, and other debris from nearby catch basins and storm drains so rainwater can flow freely.

• Ensure sump pumps are working properly and, where available, backup power systems are ready if needed.

• Check that downspouts direct water away from building foundations and do not drain onto neighbouring properties.

• Remove debris from eavestroughs and gutters to prevent water from backing up.

• Monitor low-lying areas on their property where water tends to collect, and keep drainage paths clear.

The City says it will continue monitoring weather conditions throughout the weekend, with municipal crews prepared to respond should localized drainage concerns develop.

Motorists are also reminded to use caution during periods of heavy rain and never drive through water covering a roadway, as the depth of the water and the condition of the road beneath it may be difficult to determine.

City officials say taking simple preventative measures now can go a long way in reducing the potential for drainage issues during extended periods of rainfall.
