Try not to waste your energy when others show up in nasty ways. If you see someone being hateful or mean-spirited, remember the saying that “hurt people hurt people.” This is not about you. To lighten the energy, consider taking on the time-tested practice of lovingkindness. Find a moment to sit in stillness and take a few deep breaths. Then repeat a few simple phrases to yourself:
“May you be filled with loving-kindness.”
“May you be well in body and mind.”
“May you be at ease and happy.”
2. Then, send these wishes to someone you love. (you may prefer to start with sending these wishes to someone you really care about, then to yourself. Your call.
3. Then offer these thoughts to someone who you find challenging or difficult. You are not attached to outcome - you’re just putting these thoughts out… It may help to imagine the person you have in mind “as they were when they were a young, vulnerable child, before things became so difficult.”
4. Finally practice sending these thoughts to the globe.
Take your time, and really feel into it. It’s a surprisingly powerful practice.
