What is shaping up to be possibly the strongest wind storm we've seen in years is expected to affect Southern Ontario beginning early Sunday morning and lasting through the day and into the evening. The latest model data suggests that this storm will be stronger than initially expected so we've updated our map and increased the expected maximum wind gusts for almost every area.

The strongest wind gusts will be found along the shoreline north of Lake Ontario and Erie where gusts may exceed 110km/h (there are some indications that locations like Port Colborne and Price Edward County could see gusts near 120km/h). Other areas directly along the shorelines of the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay including much of the GTA and into Extreme Southwestern Ontario (Windsor, Sarnia etc.) will see gusts around 100km/h. This zone also extends inland through higher elevations like the Dundalk Highlands including Orangeville and the Blue Mountains.

The rest of Southern Ontario except for those near the Quebec border will see wind gusts near or slightly above severe levels ranging from 90-105km/h. Wind gusts are expected to remain below the severe level through the Ottawa Valley and along the Quebec border with maximum gusts between 70-85km/h.

The wind storm will peak during the afternoon or early evening hours with the damaging gusts subsiding just after midnight. Most areas will still see strong wind gusts between 60-80km/h continue overnight and into Monday morning.

Widespread power outages are likely tomorrow especially in the hardest-hit regions along the shorelines so be sure to be prepared for outages that may last for hours (or even days). Also, bring in anything that can easily blow away such as holiday decorations!

Stay safe!
