Energy drinks are not sports drinks—and the difference matters for children.
Doctors are warning that highly caffeinated energy drinks can pose serious risks for children and adolescents, with reported problems including abnormal heart rhythms and seizures.
Bright packaging and sweet flavours can make these drinks look harmless, but their caffeine and stimulant content can be very different from ordinary sports drinks.
👉 What should parents check before children reach for one?

Renovating an older home? Suspect asbestos? Don’t start tearing it out.
Older Canadian homes can contain asbestos in materials such as insulation, ceiling finishes, flooring and other building products.
The biggest concern often begins when those materials are cut, drilled, sanded or demolished, potentially releasing fibres into the air.
👉 What materials deserve extra attention, and what should you do before renovation begins?

Ontario property taxes have an unusual problem: many homes are still being assessed using values from years ago.
Property assessments and current market prices are not the same thing. But when assessments remain based on an older valuation date while neighbourhoods and housing markets change dramatically, homeowners can understandably wonder whether the system still distributes the tax burden fairly.
A home’s property tax bill also isn’t determined by assessment value alone. Municipal tax rates and how a property’s assessed value compares with other properties in the same tax class matter too.
So if Ontario eventually updates assessments, a higher assessment does not automatically mean everyone’s property tax rises by the same amount.
👉 Why are Ontario assessments so outdated, who could pay more after reassessment, and who could potentially pay less?

Two very different cases—one involving allegations surrounding seven Cornell University students, and another involving Canadian hockey players—have brought the same difficult issue back into public discussion:
How do intoxication and consent intersect in sexual-assault investigations?
Being intoxicated does not by itself answer whether consent existed. Investigators and courts may need to examine what happened at the time, the person’s capacity to consent, what was communicated, and the evidence surrounding the encounter.
These cases also show why public assumptions about alcohol, memory and sexual consent can differ significantly from the legal questions investigators must consider.
👉 Why has intoxication become such an important issue in sexual-assault cases, and how does Canadian law approach consent and capacity?

Using AI to prepare an immigration or refugee case in Canada? The IRB is drawing clearer lines around what is acceptable.
AI tools can help with drafting, organizing information and improving language—but there is an important difference between using AI as an assistant and allowing it to generate facts, evidence or arguments that are inaccurate or cannot be verified.
Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board has formalized guidance around AI-generated material. For applicants and representatives, the key issue is responsibility: you remain responsible for what is submitted in your case, even if AI helped create it.
That means fabricated citations, invented facts, altered evidence or AI-generated content presented without proper care can create serious problems in proceedings.
👉 Where are the red lines, what uses of AI may be acceptable, and what should applicants check before submitting documents?

A government benefit that normally arrives on schedule suddenly doesn’t show up.
It’s easy to assume: “Have I lost my eligibility?”
But a missing or stopped payment doesn’t necessarily mean the benefit is gone. Changes involving tax filing, marital status, income information, address, direct deposit details or documents requested by the government can sometimes affect payments.
The important thing is to identify why the payment stopped rather than immediately submitting a new application or assuming the benefit has ended.
👉 What should you check first when a Canadian government benefit suddenly stops—and when should you contact the responsible agency?

Minimum-wage increases took effect today, October 1, in five Canadian provinces.
In Ontario, the general minimum wage has increased to $17.95 an hour. Other provinces implementing increases today are Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
For workers paid at or near minimum wage, it’s worth checking the new rate that applies where you work—and making sure upcoming pay reflects the change.
👉 See how much the minimum wage has increased in each of the five provinces.

Buying a new TV, refrigerator, laptop or other appliance in Canada? At checkout, you may be asked whether you want to pay extra for an extended warranty.
Before saying yes, check your credit card.
Some Canadian credit cards include extended warranty protection when an eligible purchase is charged to the card. Depending on the policy, this may extend the manufacturer’s warranty without requiring you to buy a separate protection plan from the retailer.
But coverage isn’t automatic for every purchase. Product exclusions, maximum coverage amounts, payment requirements and claim procedures can all matter.
👉 Before paying for an extended warranty, here’s what to check—and how to find out whether your credit card may already provide similar protection.
