π‘ DID YOU KNOW? | COOKSVILLE HISTORY
π The Four Corners β Dundas & Hurontario
Long before Mississauga became the city we know today, the intersection of Dundas Street and Hurontario Street was already the heart of a growing community.
Originally known as Harrisville, the community was renamed Cooksville in 1836 after local entrepreneur Jacob Cook, who helped turn the area into an important stagecoach and mail hub.
π₯ In 1852, a devastating fire destroyed much of the village.
But here's one of my favourite pieces of Cooksville historyβ¦
πͺ A general store built following the fire eventually had to be relocated. In 1927, the approximately 200-ton building was moved about 80 feet using rails and horses β reportedly without even closing the store for business!
Nearly two centuries later, the Four Corners remain at the heart of Cooksville.
History is all around us β sometimes we just have to know where to look. β€οΈ
