Municipal real estate taxes in the GTA have been growing constantly, since the perceived value of houses is constantly rising.
The truth is that the value of real estate dropped significantly over the last 4 years.
Did the municipalities lower the taxes as well?

My wife's family is from Malta.

Malta does not levy an annual tax on property ownership.

When purchasing real estate in Malta, buyers pay a 5% stamp duty. However, first-time buyers are exempt from stamp duty on the first €200,000 of the property’s value. Legal fees generally amount to around 1.5%, bringing the total transaction costs to approximately 6.5% of the purchase price.
