To new beginnings!
Over two years ago, I started a journey I hadn’t planned for—becoming a real estate agent. At the time, I was content as a barber and business owner, and a career switch wasn’t even on my radar. Then one day, my mother-in-law asked me to help her with something on the computer. Little did I know, I was drafting an Agreement of Purchase and Sale. Something clicked. I found myself captivated by the nuances and practices of real estate, and I realized I wanted to help people navigate one of the biggest investments of their lives.
I reached out to my brother-from-another-mother, , who had recently made a similar career change. Between him and my mother-in-law, I received invaluable support and guidance that I can’t thank them enough for.
The journey wasn’t easy—two years of studying (and plenty of procrastination), exams, and scraping through by the skin of my teeth. In fact, I was just three days away from my course expiring and having to start over! But I made it.
Next came the challenge of finding the right brokerage. I explored several options, but nothing felt like the right fit—too stuffy, too posh, too money-driven, or just not aligned with the way I wanted to represent myself. Then I connected with my friend and his team at eXp Realty. The environment felt perfect—relaxed but driven, focused but approachable. Gurpreet has been an incredible mentor, guiding me with patience and respect, and I’m so grateful for his support.
For some reason, I held off on announcing my new career until I closed my first deal—maybe it was imposter syndrome or simply wanting to prove to myself that I could do it. But now, with my first deal signed and set to close at the end of the month, I can confidently and proudly say:
My name is Boye Maehara, and I am a real estate agent.
Here’s to helping people find their perfect home and building a future I’m proud of.
