Oakville homeowners are now dealing with a double conversation — property tax increases AND a separate stormwater fee added to tax bills.
The Town says the change is meant to create a “fairer” system by separating stormwater costs from general property taxes and charging based on runoff impact. Detached homes could eventually pay up to $273/year, townhomes $128, and condos $60 once fully phased in. (oakville.ca)
But many residents are asking a fair question:If stormwater costs were already part of property taxes before, does separating the fee really reduce the burden — or just make the increase more visible?
With rapid growth, aging infrastructure, and flooding concerns, municipalities clearly need investment. At the same time, homeowners are feeling squeezed from every direction — mortgage costs, insurance, utilities, and now additional line-item charges.
Transparency matters. Accountability matters. And residents deserve clear communication on where every dollar is going.
