Before Lakeview Village began taking shape, this site was home to the Lakeview Generating Station, a familiar landmark on Mississauga’s waterfront. By 1968, the eight-unit thermal-electric coal-powered plant had reached a generating capacity of 2,400 megawatts and, at its peak, supplied approximately 17% of Ontario’s electricity needs.

Today, Illumination Way reflects a new era of energy and advancement, providing home to what will be North America’s largest district energy system of its kind designed to provide low-carbon heating and cooling across the Lakeview Village community.

Did you know the name 'Leading Sea' reflects the region's deep Indigenous history?

In Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe), Niigaani Gichigami translates to Leading Sea — a name used for Lake Ontario because it is the furthest east in the basin and the first lake encountered when travelling inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Ojibwe is the most widely spoken Indigenous language across the Great Lakes basin, and many traditional place names reflect the cultural and ecological significance of these waters.

Recognizing these original names is a powerful step toward reclaiming history and honouring the enduring connection between Indigenous peoples and the waters of this region. Let's continue to listen, learn, and honour the land and water caretakers who came before us. 🧡

Jim Tovey Boulevard honours the legacy of former Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey, whose vision helped transform the future of Mississauga’s Lakeview waterfront.

Tovey was a driving force behind the Lakeview master plan, which reimagined the former industrial lands as a vibrant, sustainable waterfront community.
His commitment to environmental restoration and public access to the lake is also reflected in the Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area, a new 64-acre waterfront greenspace connected to the Lakeview Village community. The conservation area, which opens May 30 this year, will feature wetlands, trails, boardwalks and natural habitats, reconnecting people, and wildlife with the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Together, Jim Tovey Boulevard and the conservation area honour a legacy of community leadership, environmental stewardship, and a renewed vision for Mississauga’s waterfront.
