From the archives...

An architect's vision for the Catholic Centre (c1960s) and the nearly finished product in 1963. Modifications had to be made, probably to respect the architectural heritage of the area as much as for budget reasons - more digging in the archives might shed some light on the matter!

For several weeks, the Afghan Women's Centre of Montreal (AWCM) has been preparing for the arrival of Afghan refugees in Quebec. Some families have already arrived; the AWCM has welcomed them and accompanied them as they begin to settle in Quebec. The AWCM has been busy with calls from journalists, offers of donated clothing, conferences, and hundreds of messages from Afghans seeking to flee the Taliban.

Yesterday, our new mural was officially inaugurated! The artist, Ankhone, worked with neighbourhood kids to come up with the design, which has a secret garden motif and is done in a style reminiscent of stained glass. The project includes the installation of planter boxes made from reclaimed materials.

Thank you to Saesem for coordinating the whole thing, and thank you Ankhone for the beautiful mural. Thanks also to the City of Montreal for supporting the project.

The Legacy of Hope Foundation’s exhibition We Were So Far Away is being displayed in the Catholic Centre. This exhibition tells the stories of eight Inuit Residential School Survivors presented in their own words and illustrated with personal and historical photographs, including their memories of childhood and their experiences of school, the struggles they have already overcome and the challenges they still face today.

The LHF is a national, Indigenous-led, charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada for over 20 years. The LHF’s goal is to educate and raise awareness about the history and existing intergenerational impacts of the Residential School System (RSS) and subsequent Sixties Scoop (SS) on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and MΓ©tis) Survivors, their descendants, and their communities. The LHF works to encourage people to address discrimination and injustices in order to contribute to the equality, dignity, and respectful treatment of Indigenous Peoples and to foster Reconciliation and to promote healing.

Tenants and their guests can view the exhibition until the end of September. Times and dates when the exhibition will be open to the general public will be shared at a later date. Until then, if you are interested in viewing the exhibit please contact the Foundation of Catholic Community Services office.

Welcome to the page for the Catholic Centre!

Originally constructed as a family home in 1889, the building housed the Montreal Convalescent Hospital then St Martha's Home before being purchased in 1947 by the Foundation of Catholic Community Services (known as the Federation of Catholic Charites at the time). As the need for space increase, extensions were added in 1948 and 1963.

Today, the Catholic Centre is home to a variety of organizations and individuals that serve the English-speaking Catholic Community and the greater Montreal community at large.
