New to Montreal winters? Three local rules worth knowing before the snow arrives.
If this is your first winter here, these are the rules people most often learn the hard way:
1. Winter tires. On vehicles registered in Québec, winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15. Garages get busy in November, so book your change early.
2. Overnight street parking. In the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough, parking on the street is prohibited every night from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., from November 1 to April 1. Plan to use your driveway or another off-street spot overnight.
3. Temporary snow-removal signs. When crews are coming, orange temporary signs are posted along the street. They take priority over the permanent parking signs, and vehicles that aren't moved in time are towed and fined.
Rules vary by borough, so if you're staying elsewhere on the island, check your borough's page on montreal.ca.
Staying with us this winter? Every West Island Rentals home has its own parking, so your car stays off the street overnight.
