Not-so-great news…

Canada has officially frozen the finalization of new citizenship-by-descent applications under the law that took effect in December 2025, allowing people born abroad to claim Canadian citizenship if they can prove a direct Canadian ancestor.

Immigration Minister Lena Diab says IRCC is investigating what triggered a wave of citizenship certificate recalls last week, and all 4,100 approvals granted under the new rules are now being reviewed — even though some people who were told to surrender their documents have since had their citizenship reconfirmed.

Officials say people who moved to Canada after receiving citizenship proof can continue to work during the review, and Diab says no new cases will be finalized until the investigation is complete. Currently, around 82,000 people are already waiting for citizenship certificate decisions, with processing times sitting at about 15 months for new applicants.
