Everyone in Nelson has a story …here’s mine Part 2 of 3 …

It’s the Kootenay culture. One of the first things that really stood out to me when I arrived in Nelson that first year (2015) that everyone was just so friendly. In a way that just came across as natural.

Nelson is largely filled with people in their 20’s and 50’s who all have a passion for the organic outdoor experience that is Nelson. From the night markets on Baker Street, lined with cozy Edison lights to the commanding and accessible views of Kootenay Lake from all the trials and street corners alike. It’s outright magical.

It really is Canada’s hidden gem. There is NO shortcut to get to Nelson. It is off the beaten track…you’ve got to make that detour to GET here. But once you do arrive…it’s all the same reaction in one way shape or form….”Oh wow, I didn’t know a place like this existed. This IS special…”

Everyone in Nelson has a story…here’s mine!

Growing up as one of 4 brothers, there was always lots of opportunity for adventure. In the winter, try different ski resorts was always on the docket. Well, one year I was heading out with some friends to Revelstoke for a New Year’s Eve ski trip. As fate would have it - there was ‘no place in the Inn’; all the hotels were booked. So I asked my Dad if he had any other ideas of where we could go. To which he replied, “Have you heard of the Powder Highway?” And the rest is history. I skied Whitewater with my friends that year and never looked back. That year was 2014 and I moved to Nelson the very next year in 2015 and Nelson has been my home ever since.

Nelson has that effect on people….young and old. In fact so many new people have made Nelson their home in the last few years that some have coined it Neverland; a place where you never have to age and have a chance to relive your childhood in a magical setting….

There is so much more to the story of Nelson and an exciting new development planned for our magical town. Our team will be sharing a series of posts coming down the line. We thought we’d open it up with my/our story of how discovered our West Kootenay Neverland. And there is SO much more of this story to tell…stay tuned!!! ~ Jeff
