One day, a friend challenged me to replace the word “love” with my own name in First Epistle to the Corinthians 13:4–8.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…
When I replaced it with name, it became:
Faith is patient.
Faith is kind.
Faith does not envy.
Faith does not boast.
Faith is not proud.
Faith does not dishonor others.
Faith is not self-seeking.
Faith is not easily angered.
Faith keeps no record of wrongs.
Faith does not delight in evil,
but rejoices with the truth.
Faith always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.
Faith never fails.
And I paused.
Because it is hard to be that kind of love.
Hard to be that patient.
That selfless.
That pure.
Then I realized — perhaps this kind of love was never meant to begin with us.
So I replaced the word again.
God is patient.
God is kind.
God does not envy or boast.
God is not proud.
God does not dishonor others.
God is not self-seeking.
God is not easily angered.
God keeps no record of wrongs.
God does not delight in evil,
but rejoices with the truth.
God always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.
God never fails.
And suddenly, it made perfect sense.
Because only God can love like this — completely, faithfully, endlessly.
And perhaps our calling is not to create this love on our own,
but to receive it…
and let it flow through us.
May we grow into this love,
little by little,
becoming more patient,
more kind,
more like Him each day. 🤍
