Work from home, without living at work

A productive workspace doesn’t have to look like a traditional office.

The best workspaces should make it easy to focus when you need to, and just as easy to switch off when the day is done. The secret is flexibility. Designing a space that supports your work without disrupting your life.

Rethink the idea of an “office”

Instead of assigning one fixed spot for work, think about how you want to feel during different tasks. Create small micro spaces throughout your home that support those needs, such as a bright, open area for productive bursts or deep focus, and a cozy nook for calls or creative writing. Portable lamps, mirrors, and adjustable blinds can shift the mood of each space in seconds, helping every corner work a little harder for you.

Keep movement in the mix

A standing desk, walking pad, or exercise ball encourages activity throughout the day. Rotate between sitting, standing, and gentle movement to keep your circulation – and productivity – flowing. Even a few minutes of stretching or a short walk can reset your posture and improve your focus.

Blend aesthetics with function

Choose pieces that will evolve with your day, like a sculptural stool that becomes a laptop perch, or a slim console that turns into a standing desk. If you’re adding new furniture or accessories, consider how they complement your home’s overall style, so your workspace feels cohesive, not separate. The goal isn’t more furniture, but smarter flow, that helps you move between work and rest.

Create a “shutdown” routine

When your day wraps up, give yourself a visible cue that it’s time to rest. Plug in your devices, wind up cords, and clear notebooks or papers from view. Tuck away your laptop, dim a lamp, or light a candle to reset the space and your mindset. These small rituals help your brain recharge and draw healthy boundaries between work and life.

When your workspace adapts to your life, not the other way around, focus and flow come naturally.

Thinking about making changes at home? If you have questions about your space or what updates could boost comfort or value, feel free to reach out. I am always here to help.

The recent flooding has revealed that eavestroughs, window wells, drainage, and old weeping tiles can quickly become serious problems during heavy rain.

Did you experience any flooding and water damage from the rains? Will your insurance company cover it?

A standard policy may not cover water entering from outside. Be sure that your home insurance coverage includes overland water damage (heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers).
