A rare piece of West Coast Modern history, 4290 Salish Drive was designed by architect Earl de Luca - a quietly influential figure whose architectural legacy in Greater Vancouver remains remarkably scarce. Before relocating to Los Angeles for a long and distinguished career, de Luca taught drafting at UBC’s School of Architecture and completed only a handful of known residential projects locally, making this home one of just three recognized examples of his work in the region.
Originally completed in 1968, the residence embodies the defining principles of Pacific Northwest modernism: expressive post-and-beam construction, expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing, natural timber, and carefully integrated stone detailing. De Luca’s approach dissolved the boundary between architecture and landscape, allowing the surrounding rainforest to become part of the living experience itself.
In 1977, de Luca returned to design the swimming pool and surrounding decks - an extension of the home’s seamless indoor-outdoor philosophy. The original family remained custodians of the property until 2015, preserving its architectural integrity for nearly five decades.
Subsequent updates have been approached with restraint and respect for the original design, including interior renovations in 2016, a new roof in 2021, double-glazed windows in 2023, a new boiler system, and roof maintenance completed in 2026.
What makes the home particularly compelling is its understated presence from the street. A restrained façade opens dramatically into private courtyards, expansive glass walls, and sunlit living spaces immersed in nature. Multiple double-door openings and the exceptionally private pool deck create a rare continuity between shelter and landscape - a defining hallmark of authentic West Coast Modern architecture.
Beyond the architecture itself, the setting is equally exceptional. Surrounded by Pacific Spirit Regional Park, oceanfront beaches, prestigious golf clubs, world-class equestrian facilities, and some of Greater Vancouver’s highest-ranked schools.
