Across every stage of a project, women play an integral role in how our work takes shape.

While this is something we value every day, International Women’s Month gives us a moment to pause and recognize a few of the women contributing to Placemaker’s continued growth — Sawra, Rachel, and Shima.

Different roles, one shared approach: collaboration, care, and a commitment to excellence in every detail. Whether through leadership, sales & marketing, accounting, or business development, each plays a distinct part in how our work comes together with intention.

It’s this alignment that keeps our work grounded, our relationships strong, and our projects moving forward with purpose.

Good placemaking goes beyond density, unit mix, and efficiency. It asks how people will feel and connect with the spaces.

When designing Nell’s Place, we saw play as essential — not something separate, but something woven into everyday life. Spaces were created to invite movement, spark curiosity, and bring people together across ages and stages of life.

Placemaking matters because communities work best when they reflect real life.
 
At Nell’s Place, that meant designing for diversity from the start - with homes ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments, alongside townhomes, live-work spaces, commercial units, and shared amenities.
 
In collaboration with .cities, we shaped Nell’s Place’s design through our placemaking development lens - studying how we can foster human connection and support a community that evolves with the people who live there.

As we welcome Nowruz — the Persian New Year — we’re reminded of renewal in its truest form.

A new season.

A fresh start.

This year, that renewal carries a different weight. For many in the Iranian community, it comes alongside ongoing struggle, uncertainty, and resilience in the face of what’s unfolding back home.

And yet, even in that heaviness, the beautiful culture continues.

In our office, that looked like a small but meaningful moment; learning Persian dance and passing traditions from one culture to another.

Here’s to holding both, the weight and the hope, and continuing to build places where new stories can begin.

Some of the best ideas for Mary Anne’s Place started over coffee at a heritage café on our site called Grit Café.

When planning the Mary Anne’s Place Gallery, our intention was for the space to be more than just a sales centre. We wanted it to reflect one of our core principles: connection and community wellbeing. A space that mirrors the future community of Mary Anne’s Place.

Creating a home for .grit within the gallery felt both natural and aligned.

Placemaker and Grit share a belief that great spaces bring people together, support local creativity, and strengthen the fabric of a neighbourhood. That shared spirit is now woven directly into the Mary Anne’s Place Gallery we built, reflecting Grit’s vibrancy and a partnership grounded in common values.

Over the years, we’ve been proud to work alongside Deanna, the Executive Director of , an organization that supports local artists and fosters cultural participation across Port Moody through inclusive programming, exhibitions, and education.

Together, we’re helping build a community that stays curious, connected, and creative.

From its origins as the 1908 P. Burns Butcher Shop to its recent years as Grit Cafe, this heritage landmark will be restored and repositioned by Queen Street Plaza to keep its community roots strong.
