Orange Shirt Day began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school.

This history is not distant. This was 53 years ago. The impacts of the residential school system continue to be felt by Indigenous families and communities today. Languages, stories, traditions and connections were taken from generations, and the work of healing and reconciliation continues.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we encourage our community to learn, ask respectful questions, make space for Indigenous voices and, most importantly, listen.
Listen to the stories.
Learn the history.
Honour the survivors, their families and the children who never returned home.

Reconciliation is more than one day. It begins with truth 🧡
