Mushroom season has started! While the peak is in September, there are mushrooms throughout the Highlands already.

Today, as we were taking photos of the early season's offerings, we unexpectedly met a mushroom expert from Chicoutimi who was wandering the forest doing a selective picking.

He was a wealth of knowledge; not only did he easily identify all of the mushrooms in our photographs, he explained how to harvest fiddleheads without harming the ferns and went on to share stories about the whales, urchins and phosphorescent waters of Labrador. A serendipitous encounter.

We're working on a mushroom poster (just for fun). Most are edible and several are exceptionally delicious.
