One year ago today, we almost lost Rocky.

He developed bloat (GDV)—a life-threatening emergency where every minute counts. We were incredibly lucky to get him the care he needed, and today we’re celebrating one year with our sweet boy.

One thing I’ll never forget is the look in his eyes. He kept coming back to me, looking at me as if he was asking for help. His eyes looked so helpless. I knew something was wrong, even before I understood just how serious it was.

After living through this, I wanted to share the signs we experienced in the hope it might help another family recognize an emergency sooner. (Remember I am not a veterinarian so this is not medical advice)

🚨 Trying to vomit but nothing comes up
🚨 A swollen, tight belly
🚨 Restlessness or pacing
🚨 Excessive drooling
🚨 Panting or difficulty breathing
🚨 Signs of pain or weakness
🚨 Pale gums

Not every dog will show every sign, and these symptoms can have other causes, but if you suspect bloat, don’t wait to “see if they get better.” Trust your instincts and seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Minutes truly matter.

Looking back, I’m so thankful we listened to our gut. Rocky has been through more than we ever imagined, and every extra day with him is a gift. ❤️ We are forever grateful to the incredible veterinary teams who fought for him and gave us another year of memories.

If Rocky’s story helps even one family recognize the signs early and save their best friend, then sharing one of the hardest days of our lives will have been worth it.
