Whitby, ON - The winners of the Durham Environmental Advisory Committee’s (DEAC) 2021 Environmental Achievement Awards were recognized last night, during a special virtual ceremony.

Podium Developments and Building Capital (Ironwood Community) were presented the
Eric Krause Innovation Award for the sustainable restoration of an 11-acre site and the incorporation of natural features into a low-density residential development. This award celebrates forward-thinking and innovative efforts to encourage positive change through plans, policies, or initiatives related to enhancing the natural environment.

Ironwood in North Oshawa
The Samac neighbourhood is named after Camp Samac which is part of Scouts Canada. Camp Samac was started in 1946. It was built on land donated by automobile magnate and local Oshawa philanthropist Samuel McLaughlin, the founder of General Motors Canada.
Samac is situated in the north part of urban Oshawa and is one of the newer neighbourhoods in Oshawa having been developed in stages in the early 2000s and 2010s. The Samac name is derived from Camp Samac (a Scouts Canada centre) that occupies a large amount of land at the northwest part of the neighbourhood. Samac residents enjoy the convenience of having numerous shopping options along Taunton Road. Nearby landmarks include Durham College, Ontario Tech University, Oshawa Executive Airport and the Cedar Valley Conservation Area.
