February 17th, 2026 marks the start of the Chinese New Year, also known as the lunar new year.

This year is extra special because it is the year of the Fire Horse, where the element fire coincides with the horse, a rare occurrence that only happens every 60 years.

🐴 symbolizes courage, strength, freedom, determination, energy, and momentum, while🔥 represents visibility, intensity, and transformation.

Those born in the year of the horse are believed to be social and charismatic, hard-working and ambitious.

When these two power houses align, they’re considered one of the most powerful zodiac combinations.

So, if you were born in 1966, giddy-up, this is your year!

Best wishes to everyone celebrating this month and to all the horses among us.

Thinking of selling soon? Here's a few inexpensive TIPS that anyone can do!

It's the perfect time to work on home projects that will cozy-up your home and make a HUGE impact with buyers come spring!

Purge. It sounds so simple, but a clutter-free home is easily the most effective way to create appeal and a relaxing space!

Don't underestimate the simple things. New lighting fixtures, faceplate covers, calking, parging, drywall mud and paint can make your home feel brand new! Right now the conditions are perfect for getting outdoor work done. A home that lacks maintenance tells a buyer they can expect to find problems. Regular maintenance shows a buyer that you've cared for your home and they can proceed with confidence.

Counters are not storage. Think of counter space as high end real estate! A clean and tidy counter will create an open and airy feel and the illusion of more space! Store kitchen and bathroom items OFF the counters. Use inexpensive storage baskets/bins to help keep things organized and out of sight!

Let there be light. Did you know that your lighting should match? Lighting comes in different levels of brightness and tones, cold lighting can make your home seem, well, cold! Take the time to update lighting and keep it consistent throughout the home.

Your storage is full. Cluttered closets and over stuffed cabinets will make spaces appear small, or worse, highlight your lack of space. Keep only the most essential items in closets and use storage bins to pack away off season items. Add battery-operated lighting to brighten a dark closet.

Dingy broadloom carpet went out in the 80s! But you may be pleasantly surprised by what’s underneath that dingy broadloom. Refinishing hardwood is an easy and inexpensive project. YES, you can do it yourself!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Update your home by replacing interior doors and hardware. White paneled doors and modern hardware will instantly transform your home. Look for clearance sales at your local building centres or habitat store.

As always, feel free to reach out if you have specific questions BEFORE you put time and money into updates that don't provide a worthwhile return.

An update from Councillor Glen Gower on the Flewellyn-Jones House, the heritage building located on Fernbank at the Shea Rd roundabout.
The house is one of 8 stone buildings in the Stittsville/Goulbourn area built in late 19th century in the years following the Great Fire of 1870 using stone from a local quarry located behind what we now know as Rona. The Flewellyn-Jones home is a Gothic Revival farmhouse, similar in style and construction to Boyd House and Patrick Hartin House, both located almost directly north near Huntmar and Maple Grove.
Richard and Margaret Flewellyn arrived from Ireland with their young son John in the early 1860s. They purchased 195 acres in December 1869 at Concession X, Lot 26, Goulbourn Township, now known as 5897 Fernbank Road in Stittsville, where they raised 10 children – five girls and five boys. The stone house was built in 1886.
The Flewellyn family and their descendants became community leaders, involved in the founding of what’s now Stittsville United Church, and active in the local school board as trustees.

The property changed hands several times in the mid-20th century before being purchased by Dorothy and Bill Jones in 1962.

The home caught fire back in March of this year and engineers have assessed the home and determined that the fire caused significant structural damage to the foundation, floor assemblies and roof assemblies, in addition to smoke and fire damage to the exterior and interior walls. Engineers are recommending demolition.

While I try and figure out how to attach files to my page I’ll post the link to RECO advisories here. The latest is the CEO and the RECO Board of Directors are reviewing the need for a “thorough organizational review to ensure that RECO is equipped to meet their consumer protection mandate”.
