Those small holes in the bottom row of brick are called weep holes, and they play an important role in protecting the home from moisture. Since brick veneer can absorb rainwater, the wall is designed with a drainage cavity behind it, and the weep holes let any trapped water escape at the base instead of sitting inside the wall. They work together with flashing to keep the wall system dry, reduce the risk of mold or freeze-thaw damage, and help the brick exterior perform the way it’s supposed to.
