Good news for home buyers today and for those with variable rate mortgages...the Bank of Canada has just today lowered the interest rate by another .25 points. The last decrease was mid September. This should normally see the Banks adjusting their mortgage lending rates by the same percentage.
This should normally stimulate somewhat the sale of homes in coming months, Average sale prices of homes and condo have not increased much these past two years and particularly in the Fall there are good "deals" to be had as Seller's, often with vacant properties, dont want to have to old (cost of heat , remove snow, etc.) over the slower sales winter months.

Good news for home Buyers and those with variable rate mortgages. As expected the Bank of Canada has just announced the lowering of the prime lending rate by 25 basis points ...the new rate is 2.5%....you can expect the major banks to lower their lending rates by this much by tomorrow.

Bank of Canada holds key interest rate, citing U.S. trade unpredictability....the interest rate will remain 2.75% - the same level it has been since March 2025...the next rate setting date will be September 17, 2025.

The Ontario government is protecting tenants by capping rent increases for 2026 at 2.1 per cent. This cap is based on Ontario’s Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation calculated by Statistics Canada using data that reflects economic conditions over the past year. The rent increase caps foe 2024 & 2025 had been 2.5%.

“Our government knows tariffs and economic uncertainty are creating challenges for many people in Ontario, including renters, which is why we are capping rent increases for 2026 at 2.1 per cent,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This cap is the lowest in four years, which demonstrates our commitment to protecting tenants across our province as we continue searching for ways to keep costs down across the province.”
From January 2025 to May 2025, Ontario saw 6,977 rental starts, an increase of 25 per cent compared to the same period in 2024. This is the second-highest level of rental starts on record for this time of the year, after 2023, and showcases the government’s plan to get shovels in the ground to build more homes, faster.
