Transcript: Hey everybody, Eric Vani here the real estate agent in Ottawa, and I wanted to let you know about a great book that I read called Mindset by Carol Dweck. Carol Dweck is a Stanford University psychologist, Ph.D. and she came up with a really interesting concept, and a way of thinking of how we learn. When we take on new activities, when we try to learn new skills or we are thrust into different new situations, which is pretty much all the time now as technology is constantly changing, the world's kind of a crazy place, so this is something that we are all having to deal with. The more flexible that we can be, the more we learn, the better our life is going to be.
What she is saying is that in terms of how we learn new things, there is a spectrum of how we see our own capacity to do that. On the one end you have the fixed mindset, which is what Stephen Covey would have called the deterministic mindset. You are saying this is the type of person that I am, this is how I do things, I was born this way, it's cause of my parents, it's cause of how I am, I am just not that type of person, I am shy, I am an introvert, the world is this way, I am this way my DNA made me do it. On the other end of the spectrum, you've got what she calls the growth mindset and that's where you believe in your own capacity to grow and others' capacity to grow and change and learn and evolve. So it's a really helpful and hopeful book in the sense that it really forces you to open up how you see yourself.
It's chock full of examples from clinical psychology but also from educators and parents in terms of strategies to adopt more of a growth mindset where we allow ourselves and we allow other people around us to to grow and learn new skills. I am a big fan of the conceptof positive ageing, I find there is a lot of messaging out there in society, we do it to each other, we do it to ourselves as well, we limit each other and what we are able to take on.
This is a great book in terms of opening up your horizons and helping you to believe in yourself when you are learning new skills and to stay a lifelong learner. So: highly recommended, Mindset By Carol Dweck, I bought the audio book it;s really nice, really well read. I hope you enjoy it, let me know if you do send send me a message and we can chat about it. It's Eric Vani here, the real estate agent in Ottawa, wishing you all a great day and a great end of the winter!
