📹 Doorbell Cameras Are Listening — And You Might Be Saying Too Much
Today’s homes aren’t just being shown — they’re being recorded.
If you're a buyer walking into a home for the first time — especially with an agent you just met at the front door — you need to read this.
🚨 That doorbell isn’t just a camera… it’s a microphone too.
Yes — doorbell cams and in-home audio devices are everywhere.
Yes — many are recording.
And yes — everything you say can be used against you in negotiations.
Here’s what NOT to say while inside the home:
❌ Talk about your budget
❌ Say how much you love the place
❌ Reveal how fast you need to move
❌ Whisper what you’re “willing to pay”
❌ Make rude remarks about the décor, layout, or family photos
❌ Discuss financing, job offers, or personal life details
👂 Sellers can be listening. And if they’re not — their cameras are.
And once they hear your interest (or offense), your negotiating power disappears.
💡 Here’s what TO do instead:
✅ Keep comments neutral — until you’re back outside
âś… Discuss offers, budgets, and impressions privately or in the car
✅ Treat every home as if someone is watching — because they are
âś… If you're an agent: remind your client that discretion matters before you open the lockbox
🤝 And here’s the bigger issue:
Far too often, buyers are meeting their agent for the first time at the front door.
That’s not representation — that’s just unlocking a house.
📌 Have you had a proper buyer consultation?
📌 Has your agent explained your rights, risks, and what “representation” actually means?
📌 Do you even know if you're being represented at all?
🧠It is imperative — and mandatory — under BCFSA regulations that agents clearly explain:
Whether they are representing you, or the seller
What their responsibilities are to you
And whether you are owed full loyalty, protection, and disclosure — or not at all
If they haven’t explained this yet?
🚩 That’s a serious problem.
📣 Buying a home is a legal and financial transaction — not just a house tour.
You deserve full clarity, privacy, and professional care every step of the way.
And agents? We need to step up and protect our clients — not just show up and open doors.
