After many years of speculation and rumours, a long anticipated retail store appears to finally be coming to Belleville.
Costco will officially come to The Friendly City.
Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis made the announcement during a meeting of Belleville council on Monday.
He said he spoke with the Director of Real Estate Development for Costco Wholesale Canada, Louie Loberti, about the new Costco site coming to the area.
“I was excited to discuss development plans for the new Costco site located just west of the casino and hotel lands on Bell Boulevard,” Ellis said during the meeting.
“The Costco build will be their new larger format of over 167,000 square feet, which I understand is larger than the Costco stores currently in both Kingston and Peterborough.”
Ellis says that there will also be a gas bar of just over 8,000 square feet, with 12 double-sided pumps that will allow for 24 automobiles to be fueled at the same time.
Construction value for the gas pumps and main building would total just over $37 million.
“Costco now has a draft site-plan agreement before them for their ex*****on, and a building permit can then be finalized and issued,” Ellis said.
According to the mayor, site preparation is expected to begin this fall, with construction in the spring and completion in the fall of 2027.
“We are excited to welcome this new business to Belleville and the new employment opportunities that it’s expected to create as this development moves forward,” Ellis told council.
Ellis thanked city staff for their work on the project for the last year and a half.
Additional details related to job creation, economic impacts, and employment opportunities will be shared with the public once they become available, according to Ellis.
